By boat and train around Yangon
We reach the pier of Yangon, in the heart of the colonial district, to take a local ferry! The small pier is close to the hustle and bustle of the main pier, where the Dala ferry operates. So we cross the daily market, the opportunity to buy local drinks and fruits. The ferry is already at the dock and we need a few seconds to buy the tickets! Welcome aboard !
The boat has an inner bridge and a second outer bridge, the one on which we decide to settle, the wind blowing quite often on the river! We leave the pier in the middle of the large container ships at the dock and those sailing on the river. We see one last time the colonial buildings of the Strand Road, the opportunity of pretty pictures. On the river, the scenes of daily life follow one another, between the big jetties of Yangon, the popular district of Dala on the other side, and the boats at anchor in the middle, on which we can see families cooking, doing their laundry in the river, etc. … Shwedagon pagoda is often seen, probably soon hidden by skyscrapers under construction in the city! After 1h20 cruise and several stops, we go down to the terminus, Insein.
We then drive to the market Danyingone, north of the city! This is the big fruit and vegetable market of Yangon! It is still very typical, the stands on the floor, but it could change quickly, a huge steel building being built next door to accommodate the market that will meet international standards! The charm of this market, prized by tourists, lies in the fact that it is on the edge of a railway! So we come across some stands that move with each passing train, and a large number of goods arrive and leave again by train!
We get on the train coming from the north and going towards downtown Yangon! The first wagons are mostly without seats, which makes it possible to pile up an incredible number of goods! Many shopkeepers go up with their local snacks, which they sell to the center and parks of Yangon. Going up the train, we come across the cars called “1st class”, in which the comfort is summary but in which the goods are prohibited. So we can sit there if necessary, but to see the landscape scroll, stay at the doors remains the best, and it is more airy. At each stop (about fifteen to the central station), sellers go gales sell apples, bananas, and all that is seasonal I guess … arriving in the center, the buildings are more present, the walls are tagged, the edges of the rails are dumps! What a change with the almost rustic scenery of the beginning of the course … a beautiful morning ends, allowing us to see Yangon differently.
